2018 Grades 2-5 Mitzvah Day Options

 

Students in grades 2-5 can indicate their preference for a mitzvah project to participate in during Taglit on Sunday, December 16.  Students will be in mixed grade groups to learn about Tikkun Olam (repairing the world), the organization and people they are helping, and complete the project. Please indicate your child’s preference for projects by December 11.  

Baking for the Second Step and TBA Caring Community

Students will learn about The Second Step, an organization that helps women and children who are victims of domestic violence, as well as the TBA Caring Community that provides support for TBA members in need.  They will bake desserts to be delivered with the Second Step meals TBA provides and to be delivered to TBA members who are ill and receive a meal and/or a visit. 

Painting Watercolor Cards for the Caring Community

Students will learn about the TBA Caring Community that provides support for TBA members including new members, welcome baby gifts, meals for members who are ill, bereavement support, and any other support needed.  Cards are often delivered with packages or brought by with visitors. Students will create watercolor scenes on cards to be used for the Caring Community for various purposes. 

Activity Packs for Children in the Hospital

Students will learn about Hospitality Homes that provides support for families coming to Boston for medical treatment.  They will create activity packs for children in the hospital including crossword puzzles, word searches, dot to dots, color by number, etc. We’ll provide some templates and the students can use their own creativity to bring light to another child in need.

Winter Kits for the Homeless

Students will learn about homelessness in Boston and the importance of providing winter items.  They will assemble kits that include hats, gloves, Vaseline, socks, and other essential items to be donated to a shelter to distribute to people in need.

Tzedakah Project

Students will learn about the importance of donating money to help an organization and the levels of giving that are discussed in Jewish text. They will count the tzedakah funds that we have raised over the weeks prior to Mitzvah day and pick an organization that they would like to donate the money to on behalf of the school community.
